Kenya has recorded a significant milestone in global health after Professor Kenneth Ngure was elected President of the International AIDS Society (IAS), the world’s largest association of HIV professionals, placing a Kenyan scientist at the helm of one of the most influential organisations shaping the global response to HIV/AIDS.
Prof. Ngure is a faculty member in the Department of Environmental Health and Disease Control at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and an internationally respected HIV prevention researcher. He has built an award-winning career around advancing HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, implementation science and public health policy, work that has shaped national, regional and international strategies aimed at reducing new HIV infections and improving the quality of life for people living with HIV.
Over the years, he has collaborated with governments, universities, research institutions and international organisations to develop evidence-based interventions that have strengthened healthcare systems and expanded access to HIV prevention and treatment services across Africa.
JKUAT congratulated its faculty member on the appointment, describing it as a proud moment for both the institution and the nation. The university said the election reflects Kenya’s growing leadership in scientific research, public health and innovation, and reaffirms the country’s contribution to the global fight against HIV/AIDS. JKUAT further described the appointment as well-deserved recognition of Prof. Ngure’s distinguished career, exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to improving global health, adding that it was confident his stewardship of the IAS would strengthen international collaboration and accelerate efforts toward an HIV-free future.

The International AIDS Society brings together scientists, clinicians, public health experts, policymakers and community leaders committed to advancing HIV research, improving healthcare delivery and promoting evidence-based policies. Through international conferences, scientific publications, advocacy and capacity-building initiatives, the organisation plays a central role in shaping the world’s HIV response.
As IAS President, Prof. Ngure will provide strategic leadership in advancing scientific research, promoting innovation and strengthening collaboration among researchers, policymakers, healthcare workers and affected communities, while advocating for equitable access to prevention, treatment and care services. He is also expected to champion greater investment in HIV research, encourage the translation of scientific discoveries into public health policies, and strengthen partnerships aimed at accelerating progress toward ending HIV as a public health threat.
His election comes at a defining moment for the global HIV response. Although significant progress has been made over the past four decades, millions of people continue to be affected by HIV, while stigma, discrimination, health inequalities, funding gaps and emerging public health threats continue to hinder efforts to end the epidemic.
