Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers serving in Nairobi County are set for a major salary boost once they are confirmed to permanent and pensionable (P&P) terms, marking a significant improvement from the current internship stipend of about Sh18,000.
Under the new pay structure, a confirmed Junior Secondary School teacher in Nairobi will earn a gross monthly salary of approximately Sh56,000.
In addition to the basic salary, teachers will receive a house allowance of Sh16,500 and a commuter allowance of Sh5,000, substantially improving their overall earnings and benefits.
The development represents a sharp increase from the internship package and is expected to provide financial stability for thousands of young teachers who have been serving in public junior secondary schools under internship terms.
The enhanced remuneration is also expected to boost morale among serving intern teachers, many of whom have been calling for confirmation to permanent employment after months of service in schools across the country.
Education stakeholders say the improved salary package reflects the growing recognition of the critical role played by Junior Secondary School teachers in implementing the Competency-Based Education (CBE). Confirmation to permanent and pensionable terms will also allow teachers to access additional employment benefits, including pension contributions and improved job security.
Thousands of serving intern teachers are now eagerly awaiting the official confirmation process, which is expected to transform their employment status and significantly improve their livelihoods.
