Family, friends, students and residents gathered on Saturday to bid farewell to Mercy Chelangat, a student at Kericho Township Technical and Vocational College who died following a road accident at Duka Moja in Kapkugerwet Ward, Ainamoi Constituency, Kericho County.
Chelangat, who hailed from Kaptebeswet Village in Kapsuser Ward, Belgut Constituency, was laid to rest at her family home during an emotional ceremony attended by relatives, classmates, local leaders and members of the community.
Her death has left the Kericho Township Technical and Vocational College fraternity in mourning, with those who knew her describing her as a hardworking, humble and determined student whose life was cut short while pursuing her education.
During the burial service, speakers paid tribute to Chelangat, remembering her as a disciplined young woman who had a promising future ahead of her.
They said she was committed to her studies, respectful towards those around her and admired by classmates and friends for her dedication and positive attitude.
Religious leaders urged the bereaved family to remain strong during the difficult period and find comfort in their faith as they mourn their loved one.
Speakers also called on motorists to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations to help prevent deaths and injuries on the roads.
Young people were encouraged to value their lives and remain focused on pursuing their education and aspirations despite the challenges they encounter.
Family members expressed gratitude to friends, neighbours, students and well-wishers who stood with them through prayers, financial contributions and messages of comfort following Chelangat’s death.
As mourners paid their final respects, classmates and community members reflected on the dreams she had hoped to accomplish and the impact she had made on those around her.
They said her memory would remain with her family, friends, classmates and the wider community.
