The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) has commenced activities in Nyanza Region, with Governor Gladys Wanga pledging her administration’s partnership with schools to promote education through sports.

The commitment was made during an official opening ceremony held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, where the county government formally launched the Term Two KSSSA games for the region.

In a speech read on her behalf by Deputy Governor Denish Onyango, Governor Wanga said her administration is committed to working with KESSHA officials from the Nyanza region to improve sports facilities, nurture talent, and enhance holistic learner development.

“Sports is not a distraction from books. It is part of education,” Governor Wanga said. “When we invest in games, we are investing in discipline, teamwork, health, and leadership. A learner who excels in both class and on the field becomes a complete citizen.”

The Governor said the county will collaborate with KESSHA Nyanza officials, school heads, and other education stakeholders to ensure learners have access to proper training facilities and competitive opportunities. Students identified with exceptional talent during the games will be supported to participate at national and East Africa levels, she added.

Deputy Governor Onyango outlined three key areas that will anchor the partnership: upgrading sports infrastructure in schools, integrating sports with health programs to keep learners fit, and instilling values such as resilience, fair play and time management that translate to better academic performance.

KESSHA officials from the Nyanza region welcomed the county’s commitment, saying the support will help address challenges of transport, equipment and hosting costs that have previously affected school competitions.

The officials said the regional games will be used to select teams to represent Nyanza in the upcoming national championships, and called on parents, teachers and the community to support learners taking part.
