A sombre mood has engulfed the St. Cyrilla Emulembwa Primary School community following the tragic death of a pupil who was knocked down by a speeding lorry along the Mumias – Musanda road on Monday.

The young learner was reportedly heading home for lunch when the accident occurred. Eyewitnesses said the lorry was travelling at high speed before it struck the pupil, who died instantly at the scene.

The heartbreaking incident has reignited concerns over the safety of pupils using the busy Mumias – Musanda road, which passes directly adjacent to the school.

Residents say hundreds of learners cross and walk along the road every day despite the absence of speed bumps, pedestrian crossings, or warning signs.

Angry residents and parents gathered at the scene, describing the road as a death trap and accusing the relevant authorities of failing to address longstanding safety concerns.

“We have repeatedly appealed for speed bumps and road signs near the school, but nothing has been done. Today, an innocent child has lost her life,” lamented one resident.

Parents and teachers expressed fears that more lives could be lost unless immediate measures are taken to slow down traffic around the school.

The community has now appealed to the area Member of Parliament, Johnson Naicca, to intervene urgently by facilitating the installation of speed bumps, pedestrian crossings, and proper road signage to protect school children and other road users.

“We cannot continue losing our children to preventable accidents. We urge our leaders to act now before another family is thrown into mourning,” said a parent.

The tragic loss has left pupils, teachers, parents, and residents devastated as they mourn the young learner. The community hopes the incident will serve as a wake-up call for authorities to prioritize road safety along the Mumias-Musanda road and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
