For hundreds of families working at Browns Plantations Kenya Limited, education is no longer a distant dream but a reality made possible through scholarships and skills development opportunities funded by Fairtrade premiums.
This year, the company has invested Ksh14.3 million to support 912 dependents of employees, enabling children to remain in school while equipping young people and adults with practical skills for employment.
The programme, implemented through FinteaFlo CBO, has sponsored 181 Grade 10 learners, 167 secondary school students, 287 university and college students, and trained 277 employees and dependents in driving and motorcycle riding.
Speaking during the event, Sammy Kirui, General Manager for Corporate Affairs at James Finlay Kenya Limited, said investing in education creates lasting change for families.
“When we invest in education, we are investing in opportunity. We are giving young people the chance to dream bigger, achieve more and build a brighter future for themselves and their communities,” said Kirui.

He said the company would continue supporting the initiative because its impact is visible across the tea-growing communities.
“The smiles we see today remind us why this programme matters. We are committed to ensuring many more families benefit in the coming years,” he said.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support.
“My parents would have struggled to pay my fees. This scholarship has lifted a huge burden from our family. I will study hard so that one day I can also help others,” said one student.
Parents also praised the programme, saying it had restored hope for many households facing economic challenges.
