Nyabisase DEB Secondary School in Kisii County has been closed indefinitely after students allegedly went on the rampage and set one of the school’s dormitories on fire, just hours after a colourful retirement ceremony for outgoing Chief Principal David Ogega.

The incident, which disrupted what had been expected to be a smooth leadership transition, left one student injured.

The student was rushed to hospital for treatment, while the extent of the injuries had not been established by the time of publication.

According to eyewitness Maurice Nyamache, the school had been performing well and many had anticipated a peaceful handover following the retirement of the outgoing principal.

Parents who spoke to Education News alleged that the unrest may have been fuelled by incitement from some teachers and a section of parents who were opposed to the appointment of the incoming principal, claiming he had not attained the rank of Chief Principal. However, these claims had not been independently verified.

Police officers from Nyamache, Kenyenya and Nyangusu police stations responded to the scene and launched investigations into the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the unrest.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident as investigations continue. More details are expected to emerge.
