St. Charles Lwanga Secondary and Junior School, Mukumu, in Kakamega County has announced plans to reduce its workforce, citing financial constraints following a financial audit.
In a memo dated July 2, 2026, addressed to all teachers and support staff, the school’s principal, Josephat Mandela, said the decision was reached after consultations with the Board of Management (BoM) and a financial audit conducted on June 15, 2026.
According to the memo, the workforce reduction forms part of measures aimed at addressing financial challenges affecting the school’s operations.
Mandela emphasised that the decision was not a reflection of the affected employees’ performance or commitment.
He thanked teachers and support staff for their dedication and valuable contributions to the institution during their service.
Two-month notice
The memo further states that affected employees have been issued with a two-month notice, after which the workforce reduction will take effect.
The move is expected to affect BoM-employed teachers and support staff, raising concerns about job security and the financial pressures facing some learning institutions.
The school has not disclosed the exact number of employees expected to be affected by the planned downsizing.
