End of an era: Veteran educationist Amos Awiti retires after 35 years of shaping generations

The education fraternity has celebrated the retirement of veteran educationist Amos Awiti, popularly known as “Wuod Luambo, after more than 35 years of dedicated service in Kenya’s public education sector.

Awiti officially retired on July 1, 2026, bringing to a close a distinguished career that saw him serve in eight public schools before completing his final three years as Senior Principal of Guu Senior School.

Teachers, former students, education stakeholders and members of the community described his retirement as the end of an era marked by visionary leadership, integrity and unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

Throughout his teaching career, Awiti earned a reputation as a disciplined administrator, a compassionate mentor and a respected education leader who consistently placed learners at the centre of his work.

Colleagues recalled his commitment to professionalism, fairness and accountability, saying his leadership helped shape generations of learners while strengthening the institutions where he served.

Many former students also credited him with nurturing their talents, instilling discipline and inspiring them to pursue successful careers.

Celebrating a lasting legacy

Education stakeholders said Awiti’s greatest achievement lies not in the positions he held but in the thousands of lives he positively influenced throughout his career.

They noted that his dedication to quality education, mentorship and character development created a legacy that will continue inspiring teachers and learners long after his retirement.

Community members described him as a leader whose humility, wisdom and commitment to service earned him admiration both within and beyond the education sector.

Beginning a new chapter

As he transitions into retirement, colleagues and friends have wished  Awiti good health, peace and fulfilment as he begins a new chapter of life.

Many expressed confidence that his experience and wisdom will continue benefiting the community through mentorship and community service.
