- Vihiga County has launched a week-long training programme to strengthen Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) in vocational institutions.
- TVET trainers are being equipped with skills in competency-based curriculum delivery, assessment and quality assurance.
- The county says the programme will improve skills development and produce graduates who meet labour market demands.
Technical and vocational trainers in Vihiga County are undergoing intensive training aimed at strengthening the delivery of Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET), a move expected to improve the quality of skills development across the county.
The week-long programme, organised by the County Government of Vihiga in partnership with Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic and the TVET Authority, has brought together TVET officers and Vocational Training Centre trainers for practical sessions on competency-based curriculum implementation, assessment and quality assurance.
Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo described technical and vocational education as a key pillar in preparing young people for the modern labour market.
“Technical and vocational education equips learners with practical skills that enable them to become productive, innovative and self-reliant,” he said.
The Governor said his administration plans to expand investment in vocational institutions through improved infrastructure, increased scholarships and strengthened training programmes.
He also emphasised the importance of continuous professional development for trainers.
“For CBET to succeed, trainers must continuously update their knowledge and skills so they can effectively prepare learners for today’s changing workplace,” he said.
Building trainer capacity
The programme, officially opened by Deputy Governor Wilberforce Kitiezo, focuses on competency-based curriculum delivery, modularised learning, occupational standards and quality assurance.
Governor Ottichilo said partnerships with national institutions would remain central to improving technical education in the county.
“Collaboration with institutions such as the TVET Authority and Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic enables us to build stronger training systems and produce graduates who meet industry needs,” he said.
