Residents of Homa Bay County are celebrating one of their own after Kenyan scientist Dr. Samuel Oyola received international recognition and new research funding for his outstanding contribution to disease surveillance and pandemic preparedness.

Dr. Oyola, a senior scientist at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, leads a disease surveillance programme supported by the Pandemic Prevention Institute and The Rockefeller Foundation.

The initiative has established Surveillance and Response Teams in all 47 counties to coordinate sample collection and transport to ILRI laboratories for near real-time genomic analysis of emerging disease pathogens.

The programme plays a crucial role in strengthening Kenya’s capacity to detect and respond to disease outbreaks before they spread.

“The virus is constantly mutating,” Dr. Oyola said. “No one knows exactly what it is doing within a population or what it will do next. Every piece of data we generate is deposited into an international database that is openly accessible to help scientists around the world.”

Since the programme began in June 2021, the number of counties capable of conducting timely genomic sequencing has increased dramatically. Under Dr. Oyola’s leadership, 27 counties had established Surveillance and Response Teams within the first year, compared to only three or four counties with such capacity before the initiative was launched.

His achievements come as global investment in disease surveillance continues to grow. He has secured a Ksh187.6 million ($1.45 million) Gates Foundation grant to develop an AI-powered early-warning system for disease outbreaks.

The project will use wastewater surveillance and genomic sequencing to detect pathogens and antimicrobial resistance faster than conventional public health systems.

At the Eastern Africa Regional Global Health Security Summit 2026 in Nairobi, a new US$2.2 million initiative funded by the Gates Foundation was unveiled.

The two-year programme will support seven African countries, including Kenya, in strengthening cross-border disease detection and response systems.

Dr. Oyola’s journey into scientific research began in Homa Bay, where limited access to diagnostic services inspired his interest in studying infectious diseases.

He later earned a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Cambridge and has since applied genomic technologies to monitor malaria parasite populations and SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Speaking in Homa Bay on Thursday, Dr. Oyola said the new funding will be used to train laboratory technologists from 11 additional African countries in genomics and bioinformatics, enabling them to build stronger disease surveillance systems.

He said the recognition reinforces Kenya’s growing leadership in genomic surveillance and will help position the country at the forefront of efforts to detect and prevent future pandemics across the region.
