There was joy and celebration at Nyabisase DEB Secondary School and Riokari Village in Masige East Ward, Kisii County, as teachers, students, family members and residents gathered to honour the retirement of Chief Principal David Ogega Ogeturengia.
Mr Ogeturengia retired on June 30, 2026, after serving in Kenya’s education sector for about four decades.
During his career, he rose through the ranks from classroom teacher to Deputy Principal before attaining the position of Chief Principal.
The colourful retirement ceremony was attended by officials from both teachers’ unions.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Gucha Branch delegation was led by Executive Secretary Lucy Machuki, accompanied by other union officials.
Christian choirs from Nyabisase DEB Secondary School and neighbouring institutions led worship through hymns of praise and thanksgiving.

Elders from Riokari Village offered traditional blessings, praying for good health, long life and peace for the retiring principal and his family.
Current and former members of staff praised Mr Ogeturengia for his leadership, mentorship and commitment to education.
Students also performed songs and poems in appreciation of his years of dedicated service.
The veteran educationist received trophies, commemorative shirts and other gifts from the school, former students and members of the community.
Honoured by family and community
Church leaders and community members also recognised the support of Mr Ogeturengia’s two wives, commending their role in enabling him to balance family responsibilities with his professional career.
In his farewell speech, the retiring principal thanked everyone who had contributed to the success of the ceremony.

He said he looked forward to serving the community in retirement, although he would greatly miss the learners he had taught and mentored over the years.
“I am now going home for other assignments from the community, but I will miss you very much,” he said.
In a symbolic ceremony, community elders adorned him with a traditional hat and shuka, formally recognising him as an elder.
Church members later dressed him in a white suit to symbolise purity and the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

Following the ceremony at Nyabisase DEB Secondary School, a convoy led by fellow principals accompanied him through Mogonga, Rionyiego Junction and Nyamache Town to his home in Riokari Village.
