Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Kakamega County have suspended an ongoing strike and directed to resume duty on June 30, 2026, after the Cabinet Secretary for Labour appointed a conciliator to help resolve a dispute over unpaid gratuity.

In a notice dated June 29, 2026, addressed to all Kakamega branch members of the Kenya Union of Pre Primary Education Teachers (KUNOPPET), the union’s Secretary General, Samuel Opiyo, said the Cabinet Secretary’s office had referenced a letter dated June 19, 2026 confirming the appointment of a conciliator to assist in resolving the standoff.
According to the notice, the appointed conciliator has scheduled a meeting with both parties for July 2, 2026.

Opiyo instructed members to resume duty so as to give the conciliation process a chance, but stressed that the strike had been suspended and not called off entirely.
He said it would automatically resume should the employer fail to meet the union’s expectations on payment of gratuity in full.
The notice did not specify the total amount owed to teachers or the period covered by the disputed gratuity claims. KUNOPPET has been pursuing similar gratuity and salary disputes with several other county governments in recent months over ECDE teachers’ terms of service.
