A Form Four student has been found dead in Homa Bay County in an incident that has left family members and residents in shock.

The 17-year-old, who was the son of a police officer, was discovered dead on Monday after reportedly leaving his home in Karairo Village, Kokwanyo, Rachuonyo East Sub-county.

According to police, the student is believed to have left home following a disagreement with family members.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the dispute may have been linked to a mobile phone that had reportedly been taken away by his mother following concerns over a decline in his academic performance.

Rachuonyo North Sub-county Police Commander Peter Wallah said the teenager was later found dead within the grounds of Mawego National Polytechnic in neighbouring Rachuonyo North Sub-county.

Police have launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the student’s death and determine why he travelled to the institution before the incident.

The body was transferred to the Rachuonyo South Sub-county Hospital mortuary in Oyugis, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Call for emotional support

Authorities have urged parents and guardians to remain attentive to the emotional and mental wellbeing of young people.

They encouraged families to seek professional counselling and psychosocial support whenever signs of emotional distress are observed among children and adolescents.
