The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Gucha branch has thrown its weight behind former union official Samuel Nyairo, urging former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to consider him as his running mate in the 2027 Kisii gubernatorial race.

The endorsement was made during a public function in Bomachoge Chache Constituency, where KNUT Gucha Branch Executive Secretary Lucy Bwari Machuki described Nyairo as a seasoned educationist, trade unionist and humanitarian leader whose experience makes him well suited for the deputy governor’s position.

Machuki said Nyairo’s possible nomination had been warmly welcomed by the teaching fraternity, noting that his elevation would be a recognition of teachers’ contribution to public leadership.

“Samuel Nyairo served the union with diligence, integrity and commitment. His nomination as Deputy Governor would be a great honour for teachers and one that should not be taken for granted,” she said.

Nyairo previously served as KNUT Gucha Branch Executive Secretary, where he championed teachers’ welfare through successful negotiations for delayed promotions and advocated for the placement of teachers into higher job groups without unnecessary delays.

During his tenure, he also pushed for the timely remittance of union dues and statutory deductions, lobbied for improved medical cover under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) scheme, and established a legal aid desk to support teachers facing disciplinary cases.

He further initiated capacity-building programmes focusing on financial literacy, retirement planning and professional ethics, earning praise from colleagues for his consultative leadership style and commitment to teachers’ welfare.

Beyond trade unionism, Nyairo has built a reputation in humanitarian service as a life member of the Kenya Red Cross Society. He previously served as Deputy Governor of the society, where he coordinated disaster response operations during El Niño floods, the Eberege landslide and other emergencies. He also played a key role in coordinating the evacuation of victims affected by the 2007/08 post-election violence.

A holder of a Bachelor of Education degree from Kenyatta University, Nyairo said his leadership philosophy was shaped during his university years, where he interacted with former Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i. He later served as KNUT National Treasurer.

Speaking at the event, Nyairo said he believes in servant leadership founded on public trust and democratic choice.

“If the people of Kisii believe I can serve them, I will honour that responsibility with dedication and humility,” he said.

He also appealed to residents to support former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i for the presidency and Ezekiel Machogu for the Kisii governorship in the 2027 General Election.

KNUT leaders maintained that Nyairo’s experience in grassroots mobilization, education advocacy and humanitarian service makes him a strong candidate to deputize Machogu, adding that the teaching fraternity would rally behind the proposed ticket should it be formally unveiled.
