Former national and East Africa champions St. Anthony’s Boys High School Kitale has emerged as Kenya’s most successful boys’ football school over the past 16 years, according to rankings released by the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) covering the period from 2010 to 2026.

The rankings place the Trans Nzoia-based institution at the top of school football, ahead of traditional powerhouses Kakamega High School and Musingu High School, which occupy second and third positions respectively.

Outgoing national champions St. Joseph’s Boys High School Kitale ranked fourth, while Kisumu Day High School completed the top five.

Western Kenya and Rift Valley dominate

The latest standings underscore the continued dominance of Western Kenya and the Rift Valley in secondary school football. Schools from the two regions have consistently produced strong teams that have excelled at county, regional, national and East African competitions.

St. Anthony’s Kitale has built a formidable reputation as one of the country’s football powerhouses, producing several players who have progressed to top clubs and national teams.

The school’s sustained success has been attributed to strong football structures, experienced coaching staff and a culture that promotes sporting excellence alongside academic achievement.

Western Region schools featured prominently in the rankings, with Kakamega High School, Musingu High School and Ebwali Boys High School all securing places among Kenya’s elite football institutions.

Nyanza Region also maintained a strong presence through Kisumu Day High School, St. Mary’s School Yala, Agai Secondary School, Maseno School, Kanga High School, Ringa Boys High School and Barding High School.

The Rift Valley was represented by St. Anthony’s Boys High School Kitale, St. Joseph’s Boys High School Kitale and Kabarnet High School.

Other notable schools in the rankings include former national champions Highway Secondary School from Nairobi, Moi Mbiruri High School from the Eastern Region, Garissa High School from the North Eastern Region and Coast Region representatives Serani Secondary School and Boni High School.

Building Kenya’s football talent

The rankings reflect more than a decade of competition and consistency, recognising schools that have maintained high performance in one of Kenya’s most popular school sports disciplines.

School football continues to serve as a major talent pipeline for Kenyan football, with many players who excel at the secondary school level progressing to professional clubs and national teams.

The latest rankings are expected to intensify competition among schools as they seek to strengthen their legacy and improve their standing in future KSSSA championships.
