According to Governor Wavinya Ndeti,the Foundation has invested Ksh 625 million providing transformative learning environments alongside full scholarships for students.
The M-Pesa Foundation is expanding its footprint in Machakos County beyond healthcare, having invested Ksh 625 million in education infrastructure and full student scholarships alongside Ksh 138.5 million in health facilities across the county.
Governor Wavinya Ndeti disclosed the figures on Friday, June 26 as she and the Foundation officially commissioned a new 22-bed maternity wing at Kangundo Level 4 Hospital, the county’s second-largest healthcare facility.
“In the education sector, the Foundation has invested Ksh 625 million providing transformative learning environments alongside full scholarships for students. In the health sector, MPESA Foundation has injected Ksh 138.5 million in various healthcare facilities across the county,” Governor Wavinya said.
Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi, who joined the Governor for the handover, said the project prioritizes maternal dignity.

“Dignity in giving life must never be compromised. Together with H.E the Governor, we have commissioned the new Maternity Wing at Kangundo Level 4 Hospital, funded by our valued partners the M-PESA Foundation.
This modern, state of the art facility will provide safe, dignified, and quality maternal healthcare to thousands of mothers. We remain committed to strengthening healthcare for all,” DG Mwangangi stated.
The state-of-the-art maternity unit is a direct response to maternal health challenges in Kangundo. It features a dedicated maternity theatre designed to eliminate delays and drastically reduce maternal and neonatal complications.
“We have fully stocked this facility with essential maternal and newborn medicines, ensuring that our mothers receive safe, dignified, and quality care throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period,” the Governor added.
The wing is already operational. Midwife Everlyn Mbindyo said the facility has served 2,400 mothers seeking essential pre-natal and post-natal services, with local mothers describing the upgrade as “life-saving.”
M-Pesa Foundation’s Regional Business Lead, Nairobi Metropolitan Region, Safaricom PLC, James Mutisya, said the telco’s commitment extends to digital learning.

“Our presence here today goes beyond the buildings and equipment that we are handing over. It is about transforming lives and creating hope for the residents of Kangundo and county residents in general,” Mutisya noted.
Governor Wavinya termed the maternity facility a “game-changer” for safe deliveries, advanced newborn care, and swift emergency response at Kangundo Level 4.
“As your Governor my commitment is to ensure that more mothers and children have access to quality and affordable healthcare that will ensure the desired services are offered in all our health institutions,” she added.
Kangundo hospital receives patients from Kangundo, Matungulu, parts of Mwala, Yatta, Mavoko sub counties. Also parts of Nairobi Eastlands and Kiambu County.
