The Chairman of the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), Dr. Pius Mutisya, has challenged Quality Assurance and Standards Officers (QASOs) to take a leading role in ensuring the effective delivery of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum in schools.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of a three-day STEM retooling workshop for 92 QASOs held at CEMASTEA in Karen, Nairobi county, Dr. Mutisya emphasized that quality assurance officers have a crucial responsibility to support teachers in delivering lessons that align with standardized curriculum guidelines and promote meaningful learning outcomes.
He noted that innovative teaching approaches are essential in inspiring more learners to pursue STEM pathways and contribute to Kenya’s technological and economic transformation.
“As Kenya continues to advance its vision of becoming a knowledge-driven and technologically empowered nation, the quality of STEM education remains a critical pillar in shaping future innovators and problem-solvers,” said Dr. Mutisya.
He added that effective teaching and learning systems would help align classroom practices with national and global development goals while producing citizens capable of providing practical solutions to societal challenges.

Dr. Mutisya reaffirmed CEMASTEA’s commitment to continuous teacher support programmes aimed at strengthening STEM education and preparing learners for future opportunities.
The Director of Quality and Standards Assurance in the State Department for Basic Education, Evelyne Owoko, underscored the importance of effective STEM curriculum implementation, saying innovative teaching methods would encourage more students to embrace STEM disciplines and contribute to Kenya’s technological advancement.
She said the workshop had equipped participants with learner-centered teaching approaches, enhanced lesson observation and teacher support skills, and strengthened their capacity to guide educators towards improved classroom practices.
Acting Director of STEM Training at CEMASTEA, John Makanda, observed that quality assurance officers play a vital role in monitoring curriculum implementation and ensuring quality education delivery.
“By empowering quality assurance officers with practical knowledge and tools, we can anticipate excellence in STEM education, improved learning outcomes, and learners equipped with competencies required for the future,” he said.
Makanda revealed that CEMASTEA has trained 647 QASOs over the last three years and plans to train an additional 374 officers to further strengthen quality assurance systems in schools across the country.

The workshop featured hands-on sessions that provided participants with practical insights into effective classroom practices designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, which are central to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning also featured prominently in discussions.
Participants lauded the training for enhancing their professional capacity. Joseph Musiori from Makueni county said strengthening the skills of quality assurance officers is essential because their role in mentoring teachers and monitoring instructional quality directly influences learner outcomes.
Similarly, Carol Makau from Kajiado Central noted that equipping quality assurance officers with contemporary pedagogical skills and innovative approaches is laying the foundation for a more competitive and sustainable future driven by STEM excellence.
The workshop was organized by CEMASTEA as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen STEM teaching and learning and improve education quality across Kenya.
