Sameta Boys High School has been crowned the 2026 Kisii County secondary schools soccer champions after edging hosts Cardinal Otunga Senior School 1-0 in the county finals at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho.

The lone goal came in the 67th minute through Adams Mohammed, giving Sameta their maiden county trophy. The win books them a ticket to represent Kisii at the Nyanza Regional Games set for Homa Bay School from July 7 to 11.

Players and officials attributed the victory to the strong backing of Chief Principal Daniel Mirumbe. “Sameta-fully supported by Chief Principal Daniel Mirumbe; narrowly defeated the hosts, Cardinal Otunga Senior School, 1-0 to capture their maiden county trophy,” the match report noted.

Mirumbe said the school’s investment in sports and discipline paid off. “Sports build discipline, teamwork, and resilience. I congratulate the boys for making Sameta proud. We will now prepare them well for the regional games,” he said.

According to venue organizers, this year’s championships saw the return of teams like Itierio, which made a comeback to the field although they did not qualify for regionals.

Organizers appealed to coaches and games teachers whose schools lost to join those who qualified and give them moral support as they carry the flag of the county to the regional level.

The tournament also saw Mobamba Mixed win the girls’ football title, defeating Metembe 5-4 on penalties after a barren draw.

Cardinal Otunga dominated rugby 7s, beating Bong’onta 33-0 in the boys’ final, while Nyagichenche Mixed retained the girls’ rugby title.

Sameta Boys now shift focus to the regional championships as they chase a place at the national games.
