More than 700 trainees have graduated from 26 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across Nyamira County during a colourful ceremony held at Sironga Prayer Grounds in West Mugirango Constituency.

Presiding over the event, Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo challenged young people to embrace technical and vocational training as a pathway to self-employment and economic empowerment.

The graduates received certificates in various fields, including Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Water Technology, and other artisan courses.

The ceremony attracted political leaders, Nyamira County Commissioner Benson Keparmorijo, county officials, TVET principals, industry representatives, parents, and trainers.

Addressing the graduates, the governor said TVET equips young people with practical skills needed to create jobs and drive economic growth, noting that sectors such as ICT, water technology, mechanics, construction, fashion, and catering offer significant employment opportunities.

“Your certificate is not the end; it is the beginning. Go out and use what you have learned to build your own future and uplift others,” he told the graduands.

Nyaribo urged parents to support their children in pursuing technical courses, emphasizing that vocational education should no longer be viewed as an option for academic underperformers. He noted that skilled artisans and technicians are increasingly vital to the county’s development.

To support graduates after training, the county government is establishing a database of TVET alumni to connect them with contractors, investors, and county projects. The governor also announced plans to expand the county’s youth enterprise fund to provide start-up capital for graduates seeking to establish businesses.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening TVET institutions through improved infrastructure, modern equipment, and stronger partnerships with industry to enhance the quality of training.

Graduates expressed optimism about their future prospects, saying they intend to start businesses or seek employment using the skills acquired, while trainers encouraged them to uphold professionalism and integrity as they enter the workforce.
