A fresh controversy has rocked the ongoing Kakamega county Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) football championship after Kakamega school formally lodged an appeal against Butere Boys High School, accusing the county champions of fielding ineligible players during their match played on June 18 at the Mumias Sports Complex.

In a letter dated June 20, 2026 and addressed to the Kakamega County KSSSA Secretary, Kakamega School alleged that several players in the Butere Boys squad were overage and had presented falsified documents to gain eligibility for the competition.

Kakamega School claims that records available to the institution indicate that the players were born between 2004 and 2006, making some of them ineligible under KSSSA regulations governing participation in secondary school competitions.

The school further alleged that the players were registered using questionable documentation, including birth certificates and index numbers whose authenticity should be verified by competition organizers.

“With all these falsifications, the players in question should not have played. Kakamega School’s position is that Butere Boys should be disqualified from the championship and appropriate sanctions imposed,” the appeal letter states.

The protest adds to a growing list of disputes that have overshadowed this year’s Kakamega County football championships.

Reports indicate that several appeals and protest cases arising from the tournament have been forwarded to the county games jury for determination.

The Kakamega county secondary schools games jury is expected to review the appeal alongside other pending cases involving player eligibility and competition regulations before issuing its final verdict.

Officials have urged schools and supporters to remain calm as investigations continue.

Butere Boys emerged as one of the top performers in the county championship and secured qualification to the next stage of the competition.

However, the outcome of the appeal could have significant implications on the final standings and qualification slots if the allegations are upheld.

Efforts to obtain a response from Butere Boys officials were unsuccessful by the time of publication. The county jury is expected to communicate its findings and rulings after concluding its investigations.
