- HELB has advised 2025 KCSE candidates to prepare key documents ahead of the opening of the student loan application portal.
- Applicants will be required to provide personal details, academic records, identification documents and guarantor information.
- The board says early preparation will help students complete the application process smoothly once the portal opens in July.
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced that applications for first-time student loans will soon open.
The board has advised students who sat the 2025 KCSE examinations and are awaiting placement in universities and colleges to begin preparing the required documents ahead of the opening of the loan application portal in July.
In a statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, June 17, HELB urged prospective applicants to remain alert for updates through its official communication channels.
“First-Time Applications will be opening soon. A little preparation now can save you a lot of time later. Stay tuned to our official channels for application updates,” the statement read.
Required Documents
The board stated that applicants must have a valid email address and mobile phone number.
They will also be required to provide their KCPE and KCSE index numbers together with the years they sat the examinations.
Applicants must upload a passport-size photograph in JPEG, JPG or PNG format and provide a copy of their National ID card or Maisha Card.
Those below the age of 18 will be required to upload a PDF copy of their birth certificate during the application process.
HELB has also advised students who benefited from sponsorship programmes during secondary school to prepare copies of their sponsorship letters for submission.
Applicants will further be required to provide their parents’ National Identification numbers and registered mobile phone contacts.
For students whose parents are deceased, copies of the relevant death certificates must be uploaded in PDF format.
The agency has instructed applicants to provide details of two guarantors, including their National ID numbers and registered mobile phone numbers.

Parents may also serve as guarantors.
HELB said early preparation of the required information and supporting documents will help students complete the application process more efficiently once the portal officially opens.
