Former national champions St. Anthony’s Boys High School are back on top after defeating arch-rivals St. Joseph’s Boys High School 1-0 in the final of the Trans Nzoia County secondary schools’ games played at Transcend Stadium in Cherangany Sub-County.

The hard-fought victory marked a sweet return to glory for St. Anthony’s, who had endured two difficult seasons and suffered consecutive defeats to the reigning national football champions.

The decisive moment came when Trevor Nasasiro found the back of the net to score the lone goal of the match, handing St. Anthony’s the county title and ending St. Joseph’s dominance.

The final had initially been scheduled for last weekend but was postponed following disruptions at the venue.

The controversy arose after Goseta, who had failed to honour their semifinal fixture against Solidarity, appeared at the stadium after St. Anthony’s had already been awarded a walkover and advanced to the final.

The incident led to a standoff that forced officials to suspend the match.

On Tuesday, the games jury delivered its verdict, disqualifying Goseta from the competition and directing the school to cover the costs of damages caused during the disruptions.

The ruling paved the way for the final to be played.

For St. Anthony’s, the victory was particularly significant as it came against a St. Joseph’s side coached under the leadership of chief principal Cosmas Nabungola.

Nabungola previously guided St. Anthony’s to national and East Africa titles before moving to St. Joseph’s.

St. Anthony’s head coach Patrick Mayoyo thanked God for the triumph.

“Glory to God. The match was not easy, but the boys were determined and showed great character throughout the game. They believed in themselves and fought until the final whistle,”said Mayoyo.
