Tears flowed freely as family, friends, church members, leaders and residents of Kakuma gathered at Towokayeni village in Turkana West constituency to bid a final farewell to 15-year-old Fortune Aimaya Mungoma, the Utumishi Girls Academy student whose extraordinary act of courage during a deadly school fire touched the nation.
Fortune, fondly known as Konje Konje, was laid to rest at her mother’s residence in an emotional ceremony that celebrated a young life defined by compassion, humility and selflessness.
Born on July 28, 2010, to Pauline Nakole Losike and David Wasilwa Mungoma, Fortune began her education at Echami Academy before joining St. Peters Girls Junior School in Elburgon.
She later enrolled at Utumishi Girls Academy as a grade 10 student, where she was known as a disciplined learner with great ambitions for the future.

Congregants from Good Shepherd Parish Kakuma joined hundreds of mourners in prayer and remembrance, offering comfort to the bereaved family while celebrating a life that, though short, left a lasting impact on many.
As her casket was lowered into the ground, grief engulfed mourners who struggled to come to terms with the loss of a promising student whose future held immense potential.
Yet amid the sorrow, there was pride in the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and love for others.
Fortune Aimaya Mungoma’s life may have ended tragically, but her heroic actions will continue to inspire generations.
In her final moments, she demonstrated extraordinary bravery, ensuring that her name will forever be remembered as a young heroine who gave everything to save others.
