The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) is set to receive Ksh 10.9 billion in the 2026/27 financial year, the highest allocation the institution has received in recent memory, as the government moves to strengthen medical education and expand the country’s health workforce pipeline.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) John Mbadi announced the allocation on June 11, 2026, while presenting the Ksh 4.8 trillion national budget before the National Assembly. The KMTC allocation comes alongside a Ksh 9.3 billion provision for medical interns, more than double the Ksh 4.3 billion set aside in the 2025/26 financial year, signaling the government’s intent to support health trainees from classroom through to internship.

“As a country, we value the services offered by our health workers. To build workforce capacity, I propose Ksh 10.9 billion for the Kenya Medical Training College and Ksh 9.3 billion for medical interns,” Mbadi said during the budget presentation.
KMTC is Kenya’s largest public medical training institution, producing the bulk of the country’s clinical officers, nurses, medical laboratory technologists and other mid-level health professionals.
The institution operates dozens of campuses across all 47 counties, making it a critical pillar of both health workforce development and access to training for students who do not qualify for or cannot afford university.
