A family in Nanyuki Town, Laikipia county, has been thrown into mourning following the death of 16-year-old Form Three student Sylvester Muigai Ndung’u, who was fatally shot during protests in the Likii area in Nakuru on June 9, 2026.
Sylvester, a student at Thingithu Secondary School, was reportedly caught up in demonstrations linked to opposition against the establishment of an Ebola quarantine center in the area.
The protests turned chaotic, and he was allegedly shot during the unrest.
According to family members, the teenager had been sent home from school a day earlier, on June 8, to collect a school fees balance of Sh5,700.
His mother, Lucy Kagure, said she had been working tirelessly to raise the required amount so her son could return to class and continue pursuing his education.
The grieving mother described Sylvester as a hardworking and disciplined boy whose dreams were abruptly cut short.

Beyond the classroom, Sylvester was an active altar boy at St Teresa Equator Catholic Church, where he was known for his dedication and commitment to serving the church.
He was also the firstborn in a family of four children.
His death has sent shockwaves through the school, church and the wider Nanyuki community, with residents expressing grief and demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
As investigations continue, calls for accountability and justice are growing, with community members urging authorities to establish exactly what happened during the protests and who was responsible for the fatal shooting.
Sylvester is remembered as a promising young boy whose future was cut short just days after leaving school to seek the fees needed to continue his education.
