The education sector has emerged among the biggest winners in the 2026/27 national budget after Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi proposed an allocation of KSh 784.5 billion to support learning, teacher employment, school capitation, higher education and technical training.

Presenting the Budget Statement in Parliament on Thursday, June 11, 2026, Mbadi described education as central to Kenya’s long-term development and human capital growth.

“Kenya’s future depends on developing strong human capital. To this end, we will continue to strengthen quality learning, training and research, promote equity and inclusivity, scale up investment in education and fortify the system against emerging technological and labour market shifts,” said Mbadi.

According to the budget, the KSh 784.5 billion allocation will be shared among key education agencies, including the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Basic Education, Higher Education, TVET institutions and research programmes.

The allocation comes at a time when the government is expanding the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), increasing access to university education and addressing teacher shortages in schools.

Treasury also highlighted gains made in the education sector over the last three years, including the recruitment of 100,000 teachers, construction of over 23,000 classrooms and commencement of 1,600 laboratories to support CBC implementation.

The government further noted that TVET enrolment has grown from 562,499 trainees in 2022 to 825,484 trainees in 2025, reflecting increased investment in skills development.
