Kapenguria Boys High School in West Pokot County continues to attract attention following a fire incident that destroyed property in the school’s bedding store, prompting visits by leaders and education stakeholders as investigations into the cause of the blaze continue.
Among those who visited the institution was Hon. Samwel Moroto, who toured the school to assess the extent of the damage and engage the administration on the immediate impact of the incident.
His visit formed part of ongoing efforts by leaders and relevant authorities to establish the facts surrounding the fire and support the school’s recovery process.
The incident, which occurred on Monday night, was contained by the school’s internal emergency response team, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the institution.
Despite the destruction of property within the bedding store, no injuries were reported, a situation attributed to the swift response by staff and the school’s firefighting efforts.
During his visit, Hon. Moroto expressed concern over the incident and underscored the need to strengthen safety and security mechanisms in learning institutions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
He also held discussions with school officials regarding the immediate challenges arising from the fire as investigations continue.
Students sent home
The school management, working in consultation with the Board of Management, had earlier sent students home as a precautionary measure to ensure their safety while authorities undertake a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the blaze.
The decision, though disruptive to learning, was described as necessary under the circumstances.
Investigations ongoing
Security and investigative agencies are currently on the ground, working to establish whether the fire was accidental or deliberate.
Authorities have indicated that appropriate legal action will be taken against any individuals found responsible.
Parents and the wider community have been urged to remain calm and supportive as the situation is addressed.
Education stakeholders have emphasized the importance of unity, vigilance, and cooperation among schools, families, and security agencies in safeguarding learners.
Focus on recovery
As recovery efforts begin, optimism remains that normal learning will resume once safety is guaranteed and investigations are concluded.
