The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Gucha South Executive Secretary Kennedy Migiro has called on parents whose children have been sent home following school fire incidents to take an active role in counselling them.

Speaking in Kisii town, Migiro condemned the increasing cases of school arson, warning that the trend is disrupting learning and causing widespread social and economic consequences.

He noted that destruction of school property has forced learners out of class, stalled academic programmes, and placed a financial burden on parents who are required to replace damaged learning materials.

Migiro further observed that the fires are straining emergency response services by diverting resources away from critical sectors such as healthcare and other essential public services. He added that the incidents are also contributing to insecurity, affecting local businesses and community stability.

The KNUT official cautioned students against engaging in destructive behaviour, saying such actions could have long-term consequences on their future prospects. He warned that involvement in arson or related misconduct could negatively affect opportunities in employment, higher education, and leadership.

He urged parents to remain vigilant, engage their children in discussions on fire safety and discipline, and ensure that hazardous items such as matches and lighters are kept out of children’s reach.
