Bungoma County witnessed heightened tension in learning institutions on Saturday evening after Bungoma High School, St. Mary’s Kibabii Boys High School, and Ikuu Boys High School took precautionary measures to safeguard students amid fears of unrest.
At Bungoma High School, the administration opened the school gates and allowed students who wished to leave the institution as a preventive measure aimed at defusing rising tension and ensuring the safety of learners.
Meanwhile, neighbouring St. Mary’s Kibabii Boys High School also released students on Saturday evening after tension reportedly escalated within the institution. School authorities moved swiftly to manage the situation and avert any possible disruption.
Students at Ikuu Boys High School will be sent home on Sunday, June 7, 2026, after the school announced a temporary closure following consultations with stakeholders, the Board of Management (BoM), and the Parents Teachers Association (PTA).
In a notice issued to parents, the school directed guardians to make arrangements for their sons’ transport home from 7:00 a.m. The administration said the resumption date would be communicated later.
Bungoma High explains decision
In a statement, the Bungoma High School management said the decision was reached after careful assessment of the situation and in consultation with the Board of Management.
The administration emphasized that student safety remained its highest priority.
“The decision to open the gates for students who wished to leave was a proactive measure specifically instituted to diffuse rising tension within the institution and to guarantee the absolute physical safety of our student population,” the statement read.
The school further disclosed that class teachers immediately contacted parents and guardians to keep them informed.
Students whose parents could not be reached, as well as those who faced long journeys home, were advised to remain within the school compound under the institution’s care.
Local security agencies and government administrators were also engaged to oversee the process and ensure a peaceful and orderly environment.
Schools remain on high alert
The incidents come at a time when schools across the country are on high alert following a series of student unrest cases and dormitory fire incidents reported in recent weeks.
Several leaders have recently urged learners to embrace dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution while calling on school administrations to remain vigilant in protecting students and maintaining stability within learning institutions.
