Five students who sustained critical injuries during the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Senior Academy in Gilgil have been discharged from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), marking a significant milestone in their recovery journey following a disaster that claimed the lives of 16 students.

The students were among those severely injured in the fire that shocked the nation and left families, friends and the school community in mourning.

The discharged students include June Jepkongei, a Form Four student from Rimpa in Rongai, Kajiado County; Joan Njeri, a Grade 10 student from Mau Narok in Nakuru county; Beverly Gesare, a Grade 10 student from Ngong, Kajiado County; Chelsea Mutula, a Grade 10 student from Buruburu in Nairobi County and Nicole Naisula, a Form Four student from Nakuru county.

The team led by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko facilitated the students’ safe return to their respective homes after their discharge from hospital.

Speaking during the discharge process, the team expressed gratitude for the students’ recovery and thanked medical personnel at Kenyatta National Hospital for their dedication in caring for the victims.

To support the students as they transition back home, each was given Sh 5,000 to assist with immediate needs as they continue recovering from both the physical injuries and emotional trauma caused by the tragedy.

The team also pledged to continue monitoring the students’ progress and provide assistance whenever necessary, including transportation for follow-up medical appointments.

“We shall continue monitoring their progress closely and remain available to offer any support they may require. Our prayers remain with them as they recover from the physical and emotional scars left by this heartbreaking tragedy,” the team said.

Despite the encouraging news, several students remain admitted to hospital receiving specialized treatment.

The tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Senior Academy remains one of the most devastating school disasters in recent years, leaving families grieving the loss of 16 young lives while many survivors continue the difficult journey toward healing.

The Sonko team also conveyed its condolences to the families who lost their daughters in the inferno and called for continued prayers and support for all those affected.

“May the Lord comfort the families that lost their precious daughters, strengthen those still fighting to recover, and grant complete healing to all who were affected by this tragedy,” the statement concluded.
