Following the recent fire incident that killed 16 girls at Utumishi Girls Secondary School, leaders, unionists, and other education stakeholders are still calling for stern action against those involved and justice for the fallen learners.
Speaking during a burial in Wote, Makueni County, KUPPET Makueni Branch Chairman Erastus Kimetu noted that any student who burns a school belongs in jail.
He called upon parents to embrace disciplining their children at home, adding that “spare the rod and spoil the child,” and urged parents to make teachers’ work easier by playing their role at home.
“Kindly make our work easier. Ours is to teach, mentor, and discipline where necessary. Play your role as well so that we can have an easier time,” said Kimetu.
He further noted that teachers are going through hard times and that many of them are depressed, urging them to open up and seek support.
Kimetu also called upon the government to address teachers’ issues, adding that education should always be prioritized.

However, he urged schools to adhere to safety standards and manuals, reminding them that safety is a collective responsibility and that everyone is supposed to play their part in ensuring learners are safe.
The government has announced that eight of the girls allegedly involved have been arrested, and investigations are still ongoing.
