Kakamega CSO commends St. Anne’s Junior School Lubao over CBC implementation

Ministry of Education Curriculum Support Officer (CSO) in charge of Ileho Zone in Kakamega East Sub-county, Flerian Miheso, during a visit to St. Anne’s Junior School Lubao to assess the implementation of the CBC.

Ministry of Education Curriculum Support Officer (CSO) in charge of Ileho Zone in Kakamega East Sub-county, Flerian Miheso, visited St. Anne’s Junior School Lubao for spot-checking and also to ascertain the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Miheso found that the school was on course and that CBC requirements were being upheld, and encouraged the teachers to keep up the good work, especially in classroom delivery.

He highlighted that learner-centred approaches had been observed during teaching and learning activities.

Miheso urged teachers to step up in allowing learners to make discoveries and undertake learning activities on their own before coming up with conclusions.

The curriculum support strengthens teaching and evaluation to enable learners to conceptualise and understand concepts better.

He appreciated the work of teachers and also urged them to improve on assessments, mainly formative assessments during classroom teaching, where they are able to monitor the progress of learners.

“Teacher preparedness is up to date and professional records are well kept and updated. Learners are giving positive responses, showing that teachers are doing well and that they can understand,” he noted.

Senior teacher of the school, Jacklyn Aruti (pictured below), expressed gratitude for the CSO’s visit and said it had helped identify areas that need improvement.

The CSO was impressed with the work being done under the CBE curriculum and commended the school for being on the right track.

Mrs. Aruti announced that out of 57 Grade 9 candidates who sat for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), 45 candidates were placed in C1 schools, including Lenana School, Nairobi School, Kenya High School, Maranda High School and Moi Girls Eldoret.

She added that the school has registered 63 candidates this year and is targeting 60 placements in national schools under the C1 category of the curriculum, while the remaining three are expected to join extra-county schools.

She lauded Grade 9 parents for embracing 100 percent boarding for learners, saying it has helped support students in areas where they face challenges. However, she noted that some Grade 6 parents are yet to fully embrace the arrangement.
