A man suspected of murdering a JSS teacher in Kirinyaga in March will remain in custody after a Kerugoya court granted police orders to complete investigations.
The court ordered the detention of the murder suspect linked to the killing of a JSS teacher in Mwea East Sub-County for five days to allow police finalize investigations.
Kerugoya Magistrate Lisper Gakii Nyaga ordered that Peter Kanumbi be detained at Kerugoya Police Station pending completion of investigations.
Magistrate Gakii cited security concerns as one of the reasons for the detention, noting that members of the public were angry and baying for his blood after his house was torched when reports emerged linking him to the murder. The court also termed him a flight risk after he was arrested in a hideout in Lamu County while allegedly attempting to flee the country to evade justice.
Kanumbi is the prime suspect in the murder of Betty Wanjiru, a JSS teacher who was killed in March under unclear circumstances.
Reports indicate that Kanumbi allegedly called the teacher’s parents and directed them to collect her body at the banks of River Nyamindi. Her relatives later found her lifeless body abandoned there.

Her death sparked protests by fellow teachers demanding the arrest of the suspect and temporarily paralysed learning in several schools across the county.
The suspect will be produced in court after five days.
