Education remains the greatest equalizer in society, and whenever leaders invest in the dreams of children, they invest in the future of the nation itself.
This was evident during the disbursement of the KSh64 million Sigor Constituency bursary, an event that brought hope, excitement, and renewed determination among hundreds of parents and learners.
Joel Arumonyang, the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Public Works, while presiding over the exercise, applauded Sigor Member of Parliament Peter Lochakapong for his commitment to uplifting vulnerable learners through education support programmes.
The PS described the bursary initiative as a transformative intervention that will help many bright but needy students remain in school despite the economic hardships facing many families across the country.
According to Arumonyang, education is the strongest weapon any community can use to fight poverty, illiteracy, insecurity, and unemployment.
He noted that when children are educated, entire communities experience growth because educated citizens become productive members of society.
He praised the area MP for prioritizing education and ensuring that no deserving learner is locked out of school due to lack of fees.
“Bursaries are not just financial allocations. They are investments in human potential, future leadership, and community transformation,” he stated.
The PS further called upon parents to fully support their children’s education and avoid situations where learners are forced to drop out of school because of neglect or lack of encouragement at home.
He emphasized that many students from humble backgrounds have risen to become doctors, engineers, teachers, professors, and national leaders because somebody believed in their education and extended support at the right time.
Arumonyang observed that the rising cost of living has placed enormous pressure on many households, making bursaries increasingly important in ensuring continuity in learning.
He noted that government support programmes and constituency bursaries have become critical lifelines for many families struggling to educate their children.
The Principal Secretary urged students benefiting from the bursary to remain disciplined, focused, and hardworking in their academic journey.
He reminded learners that education opens doors that no amount of wealth can permanently guarantee.
“Opportunity comes once for many children. Education is the key that unlocks that opportunity,” he said.
Area MP Peter Lochakapong reaffirmed his commitment to empowering the youth through education and promised to continue fighting for increased bursary allocations to support more needy learners within the constituency.
The MP stated that education development remains one of his top priorities because an educated population is the foundation of sustainable development.
He challenged students to use the opportunity wisely by working hard in school and maintaining discipline both in class and at home.
Lochakapong noted that many parents in rural areas continue to face financial difficulties due to economic challenges, prolonged drought, and unemployment, making bursary support essential in keeping children in school.
He said the constituency leadership remains committed to ensuring fairness and transparency during bursary allocation so that deserving cases benefit regardless of social status or political affiliation.
Parents and local leaders who attended the function praised the bursary initiative, saying it had greatly eased the burden of school fees and reduced cases of absenteeism among learners.
Several parents admitted that without bursary support, many children would have remained at home due to unpaid school fees balances.
Community members also challenged learners to take advantage of the opportunity and avoid engaging in destructive behaviours such as drug abuse, early marriages, and crime.
Education stakeholders present during the event observed that consistent investment in education contributes significantly to improved academic performance and social stability within communities.
They emphasized that supporting learners from disadvantaged backgrounds helps bridge inequality and creates equal opportunities for all children.
The event also highlighted the importance of partnerships between national government officials, elected leaders, school administrators, parents, and local communities in promoting access to education.
Observers noted that development is best achieved when leaders place the welfare of children at the centre of community programmes.
The bursary disbursement exercise brought smiles and renewed hope to many families who had almost lost hope of keeping their children in school.
For many learners, the support symbolized more than just school fees payment. It represented a chance to dream again, work harder, and pursue a brighter future.
