A Malava parliamentary aspirant for the 2027 General Election has sparked political debate and public admiration after launching a unique school outreach programme involving the distribution of cakes and scones to learners across the constituency.

Broadcast journalist John Wanyama, who has declared his intention to vie for the Malava parliamentary seat, rolled out the initiative over the weekend, benefiting more than 22,000 learners in 22 primary schools.

The programme, which fulfills an earlier pledge by the aspirant to support schools through confectionery donations, has been widely embraced by parents, learners, and sections of the electorate, particularly the youth, who view it as a refreshing and people-centered campaign strategy.

Speaking during the exercise, Wanyama said the initiative is aimed at encouraging school attendance and supporting learners who often attend classes on empty stomachs.

“This programme is meant to motivate learners to stay in school and encourage those who are not enrolled to join school,” he said.

The initiative has received praise from parents and education stakeholders, many describing it as one of the most innovative education support programmes ever witnessed in the constituency.

Malava Constituency, which has 115 primary schools, is expected to benefit further as the programme expands to more institutions.

Among the schools reached during the first phase were Namanja, Namushiya, Shandichie, Lunyu, Namatala, Ikoli, Lugusi, Mukonje, Malava, Shirugu, Samitsi, Musali, and Lunyinya primary schools.

According to Wanyama, many pupils struggle to concentrate in class due to lack of proper meals at home, a situation he said contributes to poor academic performance and school dropouts.

“Many pupils fail to get a proper breakfast before going to school, which affects their concentration and performance. In the long run, some are forced to drop out due to hunger and hardship,” he noted.

The broadcaster revealed that his own childhood experiences inspired the initiative.

“I underwent such challenges while growing up, and I understand the ripple effect hunger can have on a learner’s ability to succeed in school. That is why I am taking education matters seriously and encouraging learners to focus on their studies,” he said.

Wanyama further stated that his leadership agenda revolves around development, empowerment, and community transformation.

“My focus is on empowering the youth, women, and men by connecting them to opportunities and uplifting communities through development programmes and giving back initiatives,” he added.

He also called on residents to uphold peace and unity as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.

“We reject divisive and violent politics. Malava needs leaders who unite, empower, and deliver. We are peaceful, focused, and ready,” he said.
