A powerful wave of solidarity has swept across Bomet county as teachers, under the leadership of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Bomet branch, mobilise to raise Sh 9 million for a life-saving bone marrow transplant for their colleague, Caleb Langat of Siongiroi, Chepalungu sub-county.
A bone marrow transplant, also known as a stem cell transplant, is a highly specialised and costly medical procedure used to replace damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells.
It is often recommended for patients whose bodies can no longer produce sufficient healthy blood cells due to serious illness or prolonged treatment.
In Caleb’s case, doctors have recommended that the procedure be carried out in India, with costs estimated at Sh 9 million.
Langat, a teacher at Siongiroi junior school, has been battling a severe illness that has left him frequently hospitalised for months. The urgency of his condition has now triggered an extraordinary response from the teaching fraternity.
KUPPET Bomet Branch has taken a leading role in coordinating the fundraising efforts, with structured contributions being made in staffrooms across both junior and secondary schools.
Each staffroom has been encouraged to contribute at least Sh1,000, with over 700 staffrooms participating. The initiative is expected to raise more than Sh 700,000 in its initial phase, forming a strong foundation for the broader campaign.
Speaking during the mobilisation drive, KUPPET Bomet Branch secretary, Nicodemus Ngeno alias Mastamet Junior, emphasised the spirit behind the initiative.
“We are fully committed to this cause. We are not just mobilising funds; we are standing with one of our own during his most difficult moment. Every teacher, every school and every well-wisher is part of this journey,” said Ngeno.
He added that unity within the profession will be key to achieving the target:
“We are confident that through collective effort, we shall reach the Sh 9 million goal. No contribution is too small when it comes from a place of compassion,” he remarked.
Ngeno also appealed to political leaders and stakeholders across Bomet county to support the cause, including MCAs, MPs, the senator, woman representative, deputy governor and the governor, noting that the appeal transcends professional boundaries.
Meanwhile, the family of Mr and Mrs. Robert Cheruiyot of Kamaget Village, relatives of Caleb Langat, has organized a major fundraising event scheduled for May 27, 2026, at Kamaget Secondary School grounds starting at 2:00 p.m. The event is expected to bring together teachers, leaders and members of the public in a united appeal for support.

The community mobilisation is also ongoing at the grassroots level, with churches and local groups being urged to stand in solidarity.
A special prayer and support gathering has been planned for tomorrow (Sunday, May 3) at Caleb’s home in Kamaget, Siongiroi, as residents seek to encourage the family and strengthen collective resolve.
The members of the public wishing to support the initiative can send contributions via M-Pesa number 0706088006 (Kipkirui Aron).
