Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has called for a Senate inquiry into the regulation and compliance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, citing growing concerns over unaccredited colleges operating in the country.
Raising the matter in the House, Omtatah asked the Senate Education Committee to issue a detailed statement on the status of TVET institutions, warning that some are offering unapproved programmes, misrepresenting certifications and falsely claiming international partnerships.
He said the trend is exposing students and parents to exploitation while undermining the credibility of the vocational training sector.
The lawmaker wants the committee to provide data on all institutions registered and accredited by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), including their accreditation status and approved courses.

He further demanded details on mechanisms in place to identify and act against non-compliant institutions, particularly those operating without accreditation or offering uncertified programmes.
Omtatah also called for disclosure of enforcement actions taken against rogue institutions over the past three years, as well as the legal framework governing programme accreditation, certification and assessment processes.
The committee is expected to examine safeguards against misrepresentation of qualifications and establish the regulatory structure guiding partnerships between local TVET institutions and international organisations, including oversight of job placement claims.
The Senate Education Committee, chaired by Betty Montet, is expected to respond to the request and outline measures to strengthen oversight and accountability in the sector.
