The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has called on teacher interns to allow the government more time to secure the necessary resources to transition them to permanent and pensionable employment.
In a statement issued on April 29, TSC Acting CEO Eveleen Mitei acknowledged the delay but reassured interns that efforts are underway to ensure their proper transition.
She explained that the initiative aims to safeguard the welfare of teacher interns while ensuring the effective implementation of the national curriculum in schools.
“The commission is committed to improving the terms and conditions of service for teachers, we are working diligently to contribute to the constitutional guarantee of quality basic education for all learners, ” said Mitei
The TSC also expressed appreciation for the dedication and service of teachers, acknowledging their pivotal role in shaping the future of learners across the country.
As the second term of the 2026 academic year begins, the commission pledged to continue serving teachers with diligence and commitment.

A court ruling in February 2026 had prompted the commission to actively pursue the required budgetary allocations to facilitate the employment of 44,000 serving teacher interns.
TSC statement follows a series of protests by teacher interns, who have voiced frustration over the delayed employment process.
Many interns argue that the long wait has hindered their career progression and subjected them to financial hardship due to their low pay.
The teachers also claim that the workload assigned to them by TSC is comparable to that of permanent teachers, yet their remuneration does not reflect the same responsibilities.
