Bomet senator Hillary Sigei has come to the aid of a needy student whose heartbreaking story of survival has stirred emotions across social media.

The student, Abigael Chepkorir, a Grade 10 learner at Chepseon Girls’ Secondary School in Sotik Sub-county, Bomet county, has been forced to work in local homes and clubs in Chebole town to raise school fees after her mother fell ill and was hospitalized.

Reports indicate that Abigael has been washing dishes, cleaning clothes and doing menial jobs in hotels and entertainment spots in a desperate attempt to stay in school.

Despite her determination, she had not managed to pay any school fees since joining the institution, putting her education at risk.

Her situation worsened after attempts to secure support through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) and appeals to local leaders bore no fruit, leaving her on the brink of dropping out.

Touched by her resilience and determination, Senator Sigei announced that he will fully clear her school fees, allowing her to return to class without further interruption.

“In light of this, I have taken the initiative to fully clear her fees so she can return to school without further disruption,” said the senator in a statement.

He further revealed that his team will visit Abigael’s family to assess their situation and identify additional areas of support to help restore stability in the household.

The senator also called on well-wishers and the wider community to rally behind the family, emphasizing the need for collective effort in supporting vulnerable learners.

Abigael’s story has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many Kenyans praising her determination and urging leaders and stakeholders to strengthen support systems for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Her case highlights the growing challenges faced by learners in accessing education due to financial constraints, especially in rural areas and underscores the urgent need for timely interventions to keep vulnerable children in school.
