Wetangula pledges to address teachers’ SHA concerns

Speaker Moses Wetang’ula engages teachers over SHA concerns at his residence in Bungoma on Saturday, April 25, promising urgent government intervention.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has acknowledged mounting concerns from teachers over challenges in accessing quality healthcare under the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme, promising to push for urgent interventions.

Speaking after hosting a delegation of teachers from Bungoma county at his residence, Wetang’ula said the issues raised were genuine and require immediate attention to ensure teachers fully benefit from the new health system.

He revealed plans to meet the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Adan Duale, next week to discuss practical solutions to the early implementation challenges affecting access to SHA services.

“The concerns raised by teachers are real and cannot be ignored. We must ensure that the transition to SHA works effectively for all, especially those serving in critical sectors like education,” Wetang’ula said.

During the meeting, Junior Secondary School teachers reiterated their demand for full autonomy, arguing that it is key to the successful rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

They noted that clarity in their roles and independence in management would enhance efficiency and delivery in the new education system.

The teachers also raised concerns over fairness in promotions and employment opportunities, calling for transparency and equity within the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Wetang’ula assured them that he would engage the Ministry of Education to address the grievances.

At the same time, the Speaker urged teachers to remain united and continue supporting the government’s development agenda under President William Ruto.
