TVET PS Dr. Esther Muoria. The State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training has announced a national monitoring exercise targeting all public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across Kenya, set to begin on May 4, 2026.

The government through the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training has announced a national monitoring exercise targeting all public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across Kenya, set to begin on May 4, 2026.

The exercise, communicated through a notice addressed to all National Polytechnics, Technical Training Institutes (TTIs), Institutes of Science and Technology, and Technical and Vocational Colleges (TVCs), will cover all regions of the country.

The monitoring is aimed at checking how well institutions have put in place the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) modular curriculum, which the government rolled out to replace older, theory-heavy training approaches.

According to the notice, officials will check whether institutions are following approved modular training fee guidelines, assess the quality and effectiveness of training delivery, and verify that the restructured curricula are being used as directed. Assessors will also look into whether assessment practices are timely and carried out with integrity.

Beyond checking compliance, the exercise will provide on-site technical support and guidance to institutions and document good practices and innovations in CBET delivery.

In the notice, institutions were directed to ensure training commences at week one for the next module in the current cycle, and to strictly follow approved CBET modular training fee structures. Principals are also required to submit all training and assessment documentation, including master timetables, learning plans, formative assessment schedules, and trainee enrolment data through an institutional designated soft folder.

The access link to the folder is to be shared through the CBET Standards Verifying and Support Officers, known as CSVSOs, in each region. A copy must also be sent via their email provided in the notice not later than May 4, 2026.

Institutions must also provide access to training facilities, workshops and learning resources for verification, and ensure that all relevant trainers and staff are available during the exercise.
