The government has ordered an immediate nationwide crackdown on drug and alcohol abuse in learning institutions, with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen directing police to launch targeted operations against offenders.
Speaking on Friday at the third graduation ceremony of Matili Technical Training Institute in Bungoma County, the Interior Cabinet Secretary said the directive is part of a broader government effort to curb rising cases of substance abuse among students.
Murkomen instructed law enforcement agencies to intensify surveillance and enforcement both within and around schools, colleges, and universities, warning that those involved in the sale or consumption of illegal substances will face legal action.
“The government will not sit back and watch drugs destroy the future of our young people,” he said.
The CS cited growing concern over the impact of substance abuse on discipline and academic performance in institutions of learning, noting that the trend has also been linked to cases of unrest in schools.

He called on education stakeholders, including school administrators, parents, and local communities, to collaborate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and individuals involved in the drug trade.
Murkomen further warned that institutions found to be complicit or negligent in addressing drug abuse within their premises risk facing sanctions.
The directive signals a tougher enforcement stance by the government as it seeks to restore order and protect learners from the dangers of substance abuse.
His remarks came as thousands of graduates at the institution marked the completion of their studies, even as the government reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and conducive environment for learning across the country.
