President William Ruto has issued a fresh directive to Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Ogamba to ensure students at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) are included in the country’s new tertiary education funding framework, even before the governing Bill is passed into law.

Speaking during the commissioning of an affordable housing project at KMTC Nyamache Campus, the President told CS Ogamba to act without delay.

“As you work around the Bill, ensure that KMTC students receive an allocation for the next semester,” said the President.

CS Ogamba confirmed that the Tertiary Education Placement and Funding Bill is currently before Parliament, awaiting deliberation. The Bill, tabled by the Ministry of Education (MoE), proposes to merge the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), the TVET Fund, and the University Fund into a single entity. Ogamba said the proposed framework covers all tertiary and university students, including those at KMTC.

At the official opening of KMTC Gucha Campus, the President announced that the government will allocate resources in the next financial year towards the recruitment of additional lecturers.

“For us to effectively realise our UHC agenda, we will require more health professionals. This can only be achieved when we have adequate lecturers to train our students,” he said.

Ruto noted that the College had already recruited 600 staff members following a prior presidential directive, signalling the government’s sustained commitment to expanding KMTC’s training capacity.

He also announced the construction of affordable housing units at Nyamache and Nyamira campuses, alongside the development of new lecture halls to support academic programmes.
