Tharaka University has once again demonstrated its growing prowess in the performing arts after an impressive win at the 64th Kenya National Drama and Film Festival held at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Nyeri County.
Over the past three days, the university’s Drama Club delivered outstanding performances in three categories, including Narrative, Modern Dance and Kiswahili, earning admiration from adjudicators and audiences.
Their presentations stood out for their creativity, coordination and strong stage presence, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to nurturing talent beyond the classroom.
The highlight of the team’s participation was their recognition as the second runners-up in the highly competitive Best Kiswahili Play category.
This accolade added to a list of achievements earned during the festival, further cementing the university’s reputation as an emerging powerhouse in drama and film.
The team was under the guidance of their patron, Dr James Ndwiga, alongside trainer Ms Wendy Micheni.
Their leadership was instrumental in steering the students through vigorous preparations that emphasised discipline, teamwork and professionalism, qualities that were evident in the group’s polished performances on stage.
Speaking during the event, Dr Ndwiga attributed the success to the university’s deliberate investment in co-curricular activities, particularly drama.

“We have invested heavily in drama as a university, and the discipline of our students has enabled us to reach the national level,” he said.
Students who participated in the festival expressed pride in representing the institution on such a prestigious platform.
Speaking, one of the participant students, Doreen Mutuma, described the experience as both exciting and fulfilling.
“We are very happy to have reached the national level. It is a great honour for us, and we are proud to raise the Tharaka University flag high,” she said.
She also encouraged Form Four leavers to consider joining the university, noting that it offers a supportive environment for students to develop both academically and artistically.
According to their trainer, the stiff competition from institutions across the country maintained high morale and demonstrated resilience throughout the festival.
“Their ability to balance creativity with discipline played a key role in their success,” said Weddy.
Although the festival is set to continue until April 17, the Tharaka University team has already concluded its performances and their achievements remain a source of pride for the university community and serve as an inspiration to other students aspiring to excel in the arts.

Mr Ndegwa further noted that the university’s performance at the national festival underscores the growing importance of co-curricular activities in higher education, highlighting how platforms such as drama and film can be used to nurture talent, build confidence and promote cultural expression among the youth.
