Mitua Girls Senior School in Bungoma County has added a significant milestone to its academic record after emerging among top performers at the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF) held in Garissa County, where the school’s team won a trophy in the Biology category.

The annual fair, hosted at Garissa High School, brought together leading secondary schools from across the country in a showcase of scientific innovation, research, and problem-solving. The event is a key fixture in Kenya’s education calendar, aimed at nurturing creativity and critical thinking among learners.

Mitua Girls’ Biology project stood out during the competition, earning praise from judges for its originality, scientific accuracy, and relevance to contemporary challenges. The adjudication panel noted that the students demonstrated a strong understanding of biological concepts and effectively applied their knowledge to practical situations, a hallmark of quality science education.

The achievement highlights the school’s growing emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), an area that continues to receive increased attention within the national curriculum. Education experts have consistently underscored the importance of such platforms in preparing students for careers in research, healthcare, and innovation-driven industries.

Beyond the technical aspects of the competition, the students also exemplified confidence and teamwork throughout the event. Their participation reflected not only academic preparedness but also the ability to engage, collaborate, and present ideas effectively on a national stage.

The success has been attributed in part to the leadership of Chief Principal Angelina Kosgei, under whose stewardship the school has strengthened both academic and co-curricular programs. Her focus on holistic education has seen increased participation of students in national forums, positioning the institution among emerging performers in the education sector.

Stakeholders in the education sector view the performance by Mitua Girls as a positive indicator of the rising standards in county schools, particularly in regions traditionally underrepresented in national competitions. The achievement also reflects the impact of sustained investment in teaching, mentorship, and student support systems.

As the students return to Bungoma County with the Biology trophy, the accomplishment is expected to inspire more learners within the school and beyond to take an active interest in scientific research and innovation.

The Kenya Science and Engineering Fair continues to play a pivotal role in identifying and nurturing young talent across the country. For Mitua Girls Senior School, this latest success not only cements its academic credentials but also signals a promising future in national academic competitions.
