Kenya’s school sports excellence took centre stage at the 22nd Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA), held on April 10, 2026, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, where outstanding performers across various disciplines were honoured in a night that highlighted the strength and growth of grassroots athletics.
The event, organized under the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association framework, placed strong emphasis on school sports, with handball emerging as the standout discipline of the night.
Moi Girls High School, Kamusinga, and St. Luke’s Boys High School, Kimilili, delivered commanding performances at the awards, underscoring their dominance in the national school handball scene.
In the individual honours, Godfrey Simiyu of Moi Girls Kamusinga was named School Coach of the Year following a remarkable season in which his side consistently outperformed opponents in girls’ handball competitions. His tactical discipline and structured development program have been instrumental in elevating Kamusinga into one of the country’s most feared school teams.
Team awards further highlighted the strength of the two institutions. St. Luke’s Boys High School, Kimilili, was named School Team of the Year (Boys) after a dominant run in national competitions, where their physical intensity, coordination, and consistency set them apart from rivals.
Moi Girls High School, Kamusinga, celebrated a double after being crowned School Team of the Year (Girls), in recognition of their sustained excellence, depth in squad development, and strong performance throughout the season.

The results reinforced the growing competitiveness of school handball in Kenya, with both institutions establishing themselves as key development hubs for emerging talent. Their success at the SOYA Awards reflects broader improvements in training structures and investment in school-level sports programs.
The 2025 SOYA Awards once again highlighted the depth of talent within Kenyan secondary school sports, with Kamusinga and St. Luke’s emerging as clear leaders in shaping the future of handball in the country.
