Legislator supports the scrapping of bursary funds

By Cally Imbayi

Shinyalu Member of Parliament Justus Gesito Mugali has defended Kakamega Governor, Wycliffe Oparanya’s decision to scrap county bursary funds.
The Sh120 million that used to be disbursed to the wards for bursaries by Kakamega County Government in the previous years has since been re-allocated to Early Childhood Development Education and Polytechnic education programmes.
The MP said bursary expenditure is not a devolved function and therefore it’s the role of the National Government through Constituency Development Fund to cater for bursaries.
Mugali was reacting to the demand by Isukha South Member of County Assembly, Farouk Machanje that Oparanya should reconsider his decision on scrapping off the county bursary fund.
Machanje vowed to push on with his quest to see that the county bursary fund is reinstated in order to help the bright but needy students on ward level.
