If you sat the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination, or are a form four leaver from a previous year, the window to secure your place in a university, college, or training institution is now open and it will not wait for you.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) opened its application portal on April 7, 2026. You have until May 6, 2026 to submit your application. That is one month. Use it wisely.

Who can apply

Out of the 993,226 candidates who sat the 2025 KCSE examinations, 980,444 are eligible for placement by KUCCPS. Whether you scored an A or a D, there is a pathway for you.

If you are aiming for a degree programme, you must have scored a minimum grade of C+ (plus). For a diploma, you need at least a C- (minus), and for a certificate programme, a minimum of D+ (plus) is required.

For TVET programmes, anyone with a KCSE grade from A to E who sat exams between 2000 and 2025 is eligible to apply. This means that even candidates who did not attain the minimum grade for university entry still have a valid and valuable option. Do not assume your grade locks you out. Explore every level available to you before concluding there is no option.

Where you can apply

This is broader than many candidates realise. For degree programmes, you can apply to 43 public universities, 31 private universities, and the Open University of Kenya (OUK).

For college and TVET placement, 251 public TVET colleges are available, including 33 university TVET institutes. Secondary Teacher Training Colleges (STTCs) are also open to candidates who wish to pursue a career in education.

The type of institution you choose affects the financial support you can access. Public universities and public colleges under the Ministry of Education (MoE) are eligible for government scholarships and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans. Public colleges under other ministries qualify for HELB loans only, while private universities are eligible for HELB support only. Factor this into your decision if you will need financial assistance to fund your studies.

How to log in and apply

Visit the KUCCPS student portal and log in using your KCSE index number, your year of examination, and your password. If you are unsure of your password, use your Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) index number or birth certificate number.

Once inside the portal, browse the available institutions and courses. Add your preferred programmes to your basket, then proceed to the application tab.

Enter programme codes in your order of priority, starting with your most preferred course at choice number one, and list the same course across three different institutions before moving to your next choice.

When you are done, verify everything carefully before submitting, then log out. Do not rush this step. A mistake in ordering your priorities could cost you a placement you actually wanted.

What to check before you pick any course

This is the most important part of the entire process. Many candidates lose placements not because their grades are low, but because they select programmes carelessly.

Before adding anything to your basket, confirm the cluster subjects required for each programme and whether your KCSE subjects qualify. Check the cluster weights and the cut-off points for that specific course at each institution you are considering.

KUCCPS has already uploaded all degree programmes with 2024 cut-off points to guide candidates. The courses are grouped into 20 clusters, with competitiveness varying by demand, available slots and institutional capacity.

Only select courses and institutions where you meet all the minimum requirements. The system is designed to flag mismatches, and an unrealistic selection wastes a choice that could have secured you a placement elsewhere.

Also consider the career direction each course leads to, not just the name of the programme or the prestige of the institution offering it.

When you will report

If you are placed in a degree programme, you will join your university from September. If you are placed in a TVET programme or a college offering diploma and certificate courses, you can begin reporting as early as May, since TVET and college placement runs continuously and does not wait for the university intake cycle.

If you are interested in joining Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), note that a separate application window for the September 2026 intake will open after the current placement process is completed.

If you need help

During the application window, KUCCPS will deploy officers to universities and TVET institutions in all counties to offer in-person guidance, helping candidates navigate the application process, understand course requirements, and make informed choices. Details of these support visits will be published on the KUCCPS official website.

KUCCPS-trained officers are also stationed at Huduma Centres nationwide. If you are stuck, do not guess. Walk into your nearest Huduma Centre and get assistance.

The portal is open. The deadline is looming. Apply early, apply carefully and do not rush. The portal often experience hitches during the final hours due to large number of students applying in the last minute. Make choices that reflect where you genuinely want to go.
