Kamusinga, Butere, Kaya Tiwi and Lukenya set for KSSSA basketball national finals after semi-final thrillers

Basketball semifinal thrillers headline a dramatic day as hockey and handball also confirm finalists in Kisumu.

The 2026 Brookside Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term 1 Games in Kisumu reached a boiling point on Friday as basketball semifinals joined hockey and handball in confirming finalists for a blockbuster weekend of championship action.

In girls’ basketball, Butere Girls High School powered past Barchando Secondary School 65–54 in a tough semifinal encounter, showing composure in key moments to secure their place in the final.

Kaya Tiwi Girls High School also stamped their authority with a dominant 72–52 win over St. Brigid’s Girls High School, using its scoring depth and intensity to control the contest.

The girls’ final will now feature Butere Girls against Kaya Tiwi in a highly anticipated showdown.

In boys’ basketball, Friends School Kamusinga edged Laiser Hill Academy 69–61 in a closely fought semifinal, holding firm in the closing stages to book their final slot.

Lukenya Boys High School completed the lineup after defeating St. Mary’s Yala High School 67–49, pulling away in the second half with disciplined execution.

The boys’ final will now pit Kamusinga against Lukenya in what promises to be a high-stakes encounter.

Across other disciplines, the tournament continued to deliver drama and intensity.

In girls’ hockey semifinals, Nyamira Girls High School battled Ng’iya Girls High School to a 2–2 draw before advancing 2–1 via the 8-second rule in a tense finish. St. Joseph’s Girls Kitale also impressed, cruising past Nyayo High School 4–0 to secure their place in the final.

In boys’ hockey, Solidarity Boys (Les Titans) edged Ringa Boys High School 1–0 through a decisive strike from Onyi, popularly known as “The Destroyer,” while Friends School Kamusinga narrowly defeated Kisumu Day High School to reach the final.

In handball, powerhouse schools including Kamusinga, St. Joseph’s Kitale, Musingu and JOBO continued to dominate across both boys’ and girls’ categories, setting up fiercely contested finals.

With all finalists now confirmed, attention shifts to the championship matches, where pride, prestige, and national titles will be on the line in what has become one of the most competitive editions of the KSSSA Term 1 Games.
